Lawn tennis is a great recreational activity that can help to improve stamina, speed, agility and hand-eye coordination. It's an active sport enjoyed by people of all ages globally since there are different ways to enjoy tennis outside of tournaments and leagues.
Every amateur or professional athlete needs to have the proper equipment. High-quality tennis balls and rackets will improve your game performance according to skill levels and other specifics.
Pressurised or Pressureless Tennis Balls
The traditional tennis balls for sale are wrapped in fibrous optic yellow-coloured felt. The ball's bright colour makes it visible on the court even when travelling at fast speeds. You can buy tennis balls according to the recommended standards.
Pressurised
The standard tennis balls are pressurised, which means they have high air pressure making them bounce. Pressurised balls will wear down and lose their bounce after 1 to 3 hours of constant competition or 1 to 4 weeks of recreational play.
Pressureless
The tennis balls with thick rubber cores are heavier and aren't used for competitive tennis since they are slower than pressurised ones. Coaches use pressureless balls for beginner training or practice because of their lesser wear with a 1 to 3 year lifespan during recreational play.
Tennis Ball Colours and Numbers
In 2011, the International Tennis Federation released additional ball colours as part of their "Play and Stay" campaign, encouraging more aspiring tennis players to get involved in the sport. They gave the best tennis balls with corresponding numbers and colours to indicate levels.
Yellow
Standard yellow balls have 6.7 cm diameters and are the best tennis balls for competitive play. According to the ITF guidelines, they are suitable for players at least 135 cm in height.
Green
Stage 1 green balls have a diameter of 6.3 to 6.86 cm. These are heavy at around 47 to 50 grams and suitable for individuals between 120 to 135 cm in height.
Orange
Stage 2 orange balls have a diameter of 6 to 6.86 cm. They are lighter at 36 to 46 grams and are appropriate for people between 105 to 120 cm in height.
Red
Stage 3 pressurised red balls have 7 to 8 cm diameter weighing 36 to 49 grams, while pressureless ones have 8 to 9 cm diameter weighing 25 to 43 grams. They are suitable for beginners between 85 to 105 cm in height.
Other colours
You may buy tennis balls in other colours depending on the players' preference. Just make sure to examine each ball through squeeze, bounce and sound.
